“Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.” Matthew 5:14
Some years ago I interviewed one of the Christian business tycoon in Nigeria. I asked him about the greatest lesson he learned as a Christian in the marketplace. His answer astonished me. His answer is an eye opener to the wise.
He answered with a story. “For many years our company send an engineer to study abroad for personal development.
But as the people returned from the study leave they tendered their resignations. This happened to four of our engineers.
The matter pained me and became an issue of concern to me. “How on earth I will spend money on someone to increase his or her worth net and the person would not be useful to my organization and go somewhere else for better pay or whatever the reason may be”.
On that night, I decided within myself that never would I or my company send anybody out of the country for professional study.
On that same night I dreamt. I saw myself inside a very thick darkness. Someone can feel the thickness of the darkness. It was very thick.
In the midst of this darkness I was holding a candle with small light. Because the darkness was intensive, my candle light can not shine brighter inside the darkness.
All of a sudden, someone came out from nowhere with candle in his hand. He walked towards my direction stretched out his candle on my candle to light his candle.
He lighted his candle and walked away. Another people person came the same way, light his candle and walked away.
Several people came to light up their candles and walked away. In a short while the whole place became bright. Every these people went to other people were light up the candle from their candle light.
The darkness in the open space disappeared and every where became radiant and a voice said to me, “from your little candle light came the multitude of light to dispel the thick darkness. A candle loses nothing by lighten another. That is exactly what I sent you to do”
Since that time until now our company increase the number of our staff send to study abroad for personal development. Friend! We are the light of the world. We carry the identity of light. Our opportunities, abilities, gifts and talents are the identity of light. We must let it shine and ready to light others so they too can shine wherever they may go. That is how we can replenish the earth.
God created us with great opportunities. For you to lighten the candle of others does not reduce you rather it increases your value.
May your light shine till the end. May you not be put to shame. May your light shine brighter and stronger to light other candles.
